« Steve Lacy passed away at the young age of 69 the summer before last. After having admired Steve's work since the early 1980's and worked with him in formations ranging from the voice/sax duo to the double sextet (Clangs, recorded by Hat Hut records) since the early 1990's and introducing him to jazz pianist Chris Culpo at the onset of the new millenium, it almost seems impossible that we are performing an homage to Steve, rather than going on tour with him. After having lived through his illness and mourned with his widow, the great jazz vocalist Irene Aebi, I felt the need to make sure that Steve is NOT dead by performing his music.

Steve was first and foremost a composer. He shares our program with musicians who meant a great deal to him. He played Ellington's music throughout his career and toured with a few of Duke's at the end. "I like the sunrise" is especially close to my heart, because it was sung by the late, great Al Hibbler at the beginning of Ellington's Liberian Suite. Steve told me that Hibbler was his favorite male vocalist before meeting me. This remains one of the greatest compliments of my career.

Monk was Steve's mentor. They played together and without Monk, there could not have been Lacy.

The first time I sang Steve's music, it was in a program with jazz pianist Eric Watson which included numerous pieces by Charles Ives. We later went on to record a cd of Ives' music. It was when he heard a recording of our gig at Musica, Strasbourg that Steve took an interest in my work. The Cage could have been written by Steve and both Ives' and Lacy's music springs forth from the text.

Steve loved Satie and our mutual friend Ornella Volta, the director of the Satie foundation, organised numerous concerts with piano, voice and saxophone which featured the music of Lacy and Satie. Steve even played the Gnossiennes as a soprano sax solo!

Chris Culpo is part of a new generation of young jazz composers. His song "Paper Doves" is one of the most beautiful I have sung.

First and foremost, there is Steve's music, set to texts by Herman Melville, Judith Molina, Brian Gysin, James Joyce and others, it is a celebration of the marriage of literature and music. As the last song on the program states eloquently, "Joy said to me, My name is death's delay." Steve Lacy will never die. » Nicholas Isherwood, November 23rd 2005
