Jean-Jacques Avenel - double bass, kora, sanza

Born on June 16, 1948 in Le Havre (France). Studied guitar, switched to double bass (self-taught). Also plays African instruments (thumb piano and kora).

First professional experience in 1972 with Colette Magny, then Steve Waring (first recording); formed string trio with Kent Carter and Irene Aebi.

During the 70s, was part of the "Free" movement with Noah Howard, then played with Franck Wright's group (with Bobby Few and Mohamed Ali). Also played with Butch Morris trio and big band. Performed with the "Intercommunal Free Dance Orchestra" lead by François Tusques. Formed a quartet with Daunik Lazro. Played with group "Blue Air" (Claude Bernard, Glenn Ferris, Zool Fleischer), and with Tristan Honsinger.

Since 1981, regular core member of Steve Lacy's various bands (trios, quartets, quintets, sextet, septet, etc), many concerts and recording sessions in Europe, the United States and Japan. In parallel, played regularly with Jean-Louis Méchali's quartet. Also with Zool Fleisher's trios, Lionel Benhamou's group, Louis Winsberg's quartets, accordion player Richard Galliano's quartet and Steve Potts' group.

Has performed with Archie Shepp, Doudou Gouirand, Paul Bley, Don Cherry, Pharoah Sanders, and with pianist Takashi Kako.

A powerful player with strong tone and precise articulation, complemented by an acute harmonic sense and a warm lyrical quality, at ease with all types of music, from ethnic African to avant-garde.

Né le 16/6/1948 au Havre. Études de guitare puis choisit la contrebasse en autodidacte. Débuts professionnels en 1972 avec Colette Magny, puis il accompagne Steve Waring avec qui il enregistre. Forme un trio à cordes avec Kent Carter et Irène Aebi. Il va ensuite participer au "mouvement free" avec Noah Howard, puis dans le groupe de Franck Wright avec Bobby Few et Mohamed Ali. Il joue également avec Butch Morris en trio puis en grande formation - disque "Homeig" (Sound Aspect). Joue dans "l'Intercommunal Free Dance Orchestra" de François Tusques. S'associe avec Daunik Lazro, en quartet - disque "Zweet Zee", puis en duo - disque "The Entrance Gates of Tshee Park" (Hat Hut). Joue dans le groupe "Blue Air " avec Claude Bernard, Glen Ferris, Zool Fleischer, et dans la formation de Tristan Honsinger.

Depuis 1981, membre du groupe de Steve Lacy : nombreuses tournées en Europe, Etats Unis et Japon et importante discographie :

- Chez RCA : "The Door", "Momentum", "Anthem", " Live at Sweet Basil".
- Chez Soulnote : en trio : "The Window", en sextet : "The Condor" et également un disque en trio au Japon : "Voices".

Parallèlement, joue dans le quartet de Jean-Louis Méchali, disque Chant du Monde : "Tie Break" et "Deuxième Set". Il participe également aux trios de Zool Fleisher (disque Nocturne : "Trios"), Lionel Benhamou ( disque Open : "Fruits Cuits Fruits Crus" ), aux quartets de Louis Winsberg (disque Bleu Citron "Camino"), de Steve Potts (disque CCProduction "Pearl"). Il a joué avec Archie Shepp, Doudou Gouirand, Paul Bley, Don Cherry, Pharoah Sanders, avec le pianiste Takashi Kako avec lequel il a enregistré "Long Journey".

Il est membre du quartet de Richard Galliano de 1991 à 1993. Jean-Jacques Avenel s'intéresse aussi à la musique africaine et étudie la Kora et la Sanza. Il a également enregistré un disque en solo : "Eclaircie".
